BEAUTY TIPS & TRICKS I'VE LEARNT FROM MY MOTHER
My mum is, hands down, one of the most beautiful women I know. In fact, it's almost on the verge of irritating - especially when half of the boys I've ever dated have had a not-so-secret crush on her. Years of looking after herself, and her skin, has meant that people often mistake us as sisters - which naturally she really, really loves. Thanks to her, I've picked up many a tip and trick along the way which I hope will mean that come 53, I'll look equally as great. Here's hoping anyway.
Seeing as it's Mother's Day here in the UK today, I thought I'd not only dedicate this post to her, but also share some of her passed-down beauty advice.
QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY
My mum has always stuck to the rule of "less is more". Unlike me, an absolute skincare hoarder, she's very low-key and has stuck to using Dermalogica for most of her life. She won't shy away from investing in great skincare but by using a few great products that work for her skin type, her skin continues to reap the rewards.
A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP WILL DO WONDERS
Getting back to the basics really is key when looking after yourself. I'm not sure this is something she does in order to actively improve her skin but my mum is well known for having a very early bedtime, which seems to massively help keep her face looking radiant. Skimping on shut-eye will only make your skin look flat and dull which I've definitely noticed in myself after many a late night.
ALWAYS TAKE YOUR MAKEUP OFF BEFORE BED
My mum is very meticulous about removing any makeup before bed and making sure her skin is nice and clean. And so, now no matter how late I finish work, no matter how much I've drunk, no matter how much I yearn for bed, I always always always wash my makeup off. For those moments where I can't face my full-on nighttime skincare routine, I at least reach for a makeup wipe which yessss I know aren't ideal, but are better than sleeping in a full face of makeup.
EYEBROWS ARE EVERYTHING
My mum repeatedly told me growing up that eyebrows are THE most important aspect of your beauty look, after having flawless looking skin. A well-groomed brow not only frames your eyes but it complements your entire face. On the other hand, eyebrows that are not shaped, badly shaped, or badly highlighted can be disastrous. Despite at the time desperately wanting teeny tiny over-plucked eyebrows like all the other girls at my school, I was continuously reminded not to go too crazy with the tweezers and to adhere to my natural eyebrow shape! THANK GOD I LISTENED.
DO YOUR OWN MINI FACIAL AT HOME
Experts recommend you get a facial every 4-6 weeks, but that can be hard to work into your budget! Although my mum does treat herself every once in a while to a professional facial, she's always sworn by the fact that she can do a pretty damn good job herself at home. About once a month she'll get out all of her products and have a really deep cleanse, exfoliation, steam and then mask.
A BIT OF BLUSH GOES A LONG WAY
I know a lot of people shy away from blush and instead reach for extra bronzer, but my mum has always had a pinky blush in her makeup bag. I've of course followed suit! Of all the beauty products out there, blush is one of the most effective at changing your whole look — just a pinch can make you look healthier, dewier, and more youthful.
